Good Homes – 2021’s top home-improvement trends on TikTok and Instagram
As we near the end of 2021 (there’s now just 49 days left until Christmas Day!), there is no better time to look back at the top trends of the year. We’ve found a great article from Good Homes this week, which delves into 2021’s top home improvement trends, according to social media platforms TikTok and Instagram. Research conducted by PlumbNation analysed the number of posts and views on the two platforms, and they have released a list of the 10 most popular home improvement trends of the year.
Coming in at number one, with a massive 1.4 billion views on Instagram and TikTok combined, is the smart home. This includes smart lighting and music, as well as video doorbells, smart boilers and meters. It’s unsurprising that this trend has been so popular, especially when we consider how important sustainability is becoming! Firepits were second on the list of top trends for 2021, with over 244 million views. Thanks to the Covid-19 restrictions that were in place for some of the year, more of us spent time in our gardens instead of heading out to a pub or restaurant. Fire pits offer a cosy solution to relaxing outdoors in the evening and, according to the article, they were so popular throughout 2021 that some stores even completely sold out of them.
Tying in with people still spending a great deal of time indoors, home bars came in third on the list of top trends, with over 150 million views. They offer a great alternative to heading out to your local pub or bar, and we’ve seen so many stylish ideas in magazines and on social media throughout the year. Home bars are also fantastic for entertaining family and friends during the upcoming festive season too, so if you haven’t already jumped on board with this trend, there’s still time before Christmas!
Also appearing on the list of top trends for 2021 are pergolas, kitchen storage, blinds and skylights. The research highlighted some interesting interiors facts too. For example, freestanding baths were the most popular bathroom trend of the year (with a huge 3.2 million posts on Instagram and TikTok!), and, with over 130 million posts across both platforms, the kitchen is the top room in the home to renovate.
Make sure you check out this article to read the full list of the top 10 home improvement trends of 2021. Remember to let us know in the comments how many of these trends you’ve tried out this year!

Livingetc – Christmas window decor ideas – stylish ways to create a cozy festive scene
Now that Halloween has passed, many will be looking towards Christmas and thinking about what decorations to put up. The best thing about window decorations is that not only do they make the inside of your home look beautiful and Christmassy, but they’re also visible to neighbours and passers-by too.
Bring some natural elements to your festive interior by adding a garland to your window, but hang it low enough so that it’s visible from outside too. You can then decorate it as you would do a Christmas tree to add a more festive touch. And if you don’t have the space for a full-sized Christmas tree, you could always put a small one in the window! Alternatively, you could put a branch in a vase and decorate this instead for a more subtle look.
If you’re looking for something a little more chic, you can try hanging stars in the window. This works well if you also have your garland hung up or a branch to dangle them off. Not only will this look stylish, but it also fits in well with the latest Japandi trend.
With the evenings getting darker, why not brighten things up with some fairy lights and candles? This is also ideal if you have hung a garland from the window or added a branch in a vase because you can entwine the fairy lights around them. On top of this, fairy lights and candles will make the interior of your house feel so much cosier, which is perfect for the cold winter months.
What’s your favourite tip for some Christmas window decorations? Let us know in the comments!
