InSinkErator Reveals England’s Most Recycling-Conscious Places To Live

Research compiled by food waste disposer inventor, InSinkErator® reveals that Colchester is the most recycling-conscious area in England, followed by Torridge, Bath and North East Somerset, Stroud and Adur*.

InSinkErator® analysed data from the Government Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) on which local authorities have done the most to reduce their waste output, in addition to increasing the amount of waste that gets recycled or composted. By contrast, the data shows that the least recycling-conscious areas in England are Middlesborough, Knowsley, Blackpool, South Tyneside and Liverpool*.

InSinkErator® is an active campaigner in encouraging the prevention of avoidable food waste and the disposal of unavoidable food waste sustainably, advising consumers to compost wherever possible. Where this option is not possible, however, an InSinkErator® food waste disposer is the ideal alternative for diverting food waste from ending up in landfill. Cooking from scratch at home becomes instantly more hygienic, when an InSinkErator® food waste disposer is installed, as inedible food scraps can be disposed of within seconds. As the global leader and inventor of food waste disposers, InSinkErator® manufactures a wide variety of models, designed to suit different family sizes and home cooking needs.

All UK households will soon need to separate their food waste from their non-recyclable waste as in May 2021, the government announced that by 2023, every UK household will receive separate weekly food waste collections**. Therefore, the kitchen will be cluttered with another waste bin. For disposing of food waste safely and hygienically, and as an alternative to a food waste caddy, a food waste disposer fits neatly under the sink without compromising the overall look of the kitchen.

Not only does this offer an alternative to traditional disposal methods, but by reducing the amount of food waste being sent to landfill sites, it also helps to reduce greenhouse gases and the household’s carbon footprint. In addition, and where there is an anaerobic digester, within the sewerage system, the nutrients from the food waste can be recovered and turned into biogas and fertiliser, to complete the circular economy.

Furthermore, in March 2022, InSinkErator® previewed its complete waste management system. The, soon-to-be-available, flexible bin solutions fit perfectly under the sink, out of sight, alongside an InSinkErator® food waste disposer. Consumers can manage all their food waste, recycling and general waste easily, while keeping their kitchen organised and clutter-free. With the user easily able to separate their waste, the integrated bin systems offer convenient, sustainable and hygienic benefits, while streamlining the kitchen with all waste and cleaning products hidden under the sink. The new integrated bin system from InSinkErator® will be available in a selection of widths: 500 mm, 600 mm and 1000 mm to suit the needs of all households.

Anne Kaarlela, Marketing Communications and Customer Service Manager, Europe, InSinkErator® says: “It’s important to us at InSinkErator® to not only understand the reduction in waste targets set by the government but also how effective consumers are at recycling and composting their waste, especially with the changes in legislation soon to be implemented. With anaerobic digestion able to produce biogas from food waste, it’s vital that consumers change their habits and behaviours for the future of our planet. We hope the introduction of separate food waste collections will help consumers to be more conscious of what happens to their food waste, while also reducing the alarming volumes of food waste being sent to landfill.”
