Livingetc – 11 cosy kids’ reading corners that will spark your child’s imagination

Reading corners are a great way to encourage your child to read as they not only offer a place of solitude and privacy for focus, but they can also be creative and fun to spark some excitement into reading time. Livingetc has put together a list of inspiring ideas to help you create a space filled with creativity to ignite your child’s motivation to read.

According to a quote in the article from Jessica Mintz of JMI, an interior design house in Los Angeles, children like having a special place to retreat to, which makes designing their own little reading nook a perfect way to fulfil this. Getting your child involved in the designing process is ideal for making sure that the space feels like their own and also reflects their personality and interests. That being said, as your child grows, their interests will change, so it’s also a good idea to make sure this design can be easy to adapt in the future.

To make the reading nook more inviting, don’t forget to add comfort to it. An effortless way to do this is to throw in some soft furnishings such as blankets and pillows, creating a cosy spot to get comfortable while reading.

If you’re struggling for space, then Livingetc offers a unique idea of carving out a reading nook into a bookcase. Or why not utilise unused space by converting the cupboard under the stairs into a cosy den? Once cleaned up and decorated with lighting and cushions, the cupboard under the stairs also has the benefit of a door to offer some privacy for your child during their reading time in this secret space. Window seats are also perfect for reading as not only do they leave enough space for a parent to join, but the window also gives your child something to look out of between pages.

You could also invest in some multifunctional furniture, such as a bunk bed. The bottom bunk could be used as a reading space by putting curtains around it and dressing it up with soft furnishings.

Tents are another great way to create a fun reading corner as they add playfulness to a room and, with the addition of fairy lights, blankets and cushions, are perfect for creating a cosy atmosphere. For a similar effect, you can invest in a floor-to-ceiling canopy for an exciting look.

Pooky – Lighting tips: using candles in your home

Candles have long been used as a light source in homes, though despite no longer being essential as a main source of light, they are a great way of creating an inviting atmosphere and you can set them up in different ways for varying effects. We loved this article by Pooky which offers some ideas of multiple ways to place candles for different intentions, as well as also listing the various types of candles that are available.

Although candles are perfect for creating a warm and inviting atmosphere, they can be a little too dim to be functional as a proper light source. To amplify a candle’s light, Pooky recommends placing it either next to or in front of a mirror, window or a light-coloured wall so that the light is reflected. Opting for a glass or metal candle holder, such as a storm lantern, will also help to maximise the brightness that the candle offers.

Wall mounted candles not only offer a dramatic, romantic tone to a room, but can also be decorative as well as functional. They partner perfectly with a more traditional interior and look especially good when placed either side of a focal point such as a fireplace, archway or doorway.

Speaking of romance, a candlestick is also great for creating an intimate feel. Candlesticks are ideal as a table accessory for dinner with friends or a romantic date as they can also serve as a decorative focal point in your table setup.

Fresh Design Blog – 10 Ways to Improve the Lighting In Your Home

Lighting is important in interior design as it can really make or break the entire look of a room. It is an essential aspect to choosing what kind of vibe you want the space to have, as well as defining what its purpose is. This post by Fresh Design Blog lays out how to manipulate lighting in a room to match your intentions.

Lamps are a great way to not only support the main lighting of the room if it’s a little dim, but they are also effective in creating ambiance when it’s time to cosy up and turn the main light off. Lamps are also very versatile in their designs, so they will benefit the room by adding to the overall look and theme of your space.

Mirrors are a clever way to brighten up a room without needing to add more lights. Not only will they give the illusion that the room is more spacious than it is, but they will also reflect light when placed opposite or next to a light source. This technique can also be implemented by using light colours for the walls to increase the brightness of the room, as light will bounce off the walls.

As well as lamps, you can also install LED lights to offer more light sources to your space. LED light strips are not only trendy and energy efficient, but they are easy to put up and many will come in different colours so that you can set them to whatever matches the room and your desired atmosphere best. LED light strips are also hugely flexible and can be installed nearly everywhere; you could put them around a mirror or picture to create a focal point, or even around the perimeter of the room.
