Whirlpool Corporation has supported Habitat for Humanity for 20 years

Whirlpool Corporation Supports Communities Across The Globe

As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting communities, where its colleagues work and live, Whirlpool Corporation helped over 500 organisations across the globe in 2019. In total, colleagues of Whirlpool Corporation volunteered an astonishing 400,312 hours of their time to a range of organisations that benefit over 1.1 million people worldwide.

Initiatives supported in 2019 include Habitat for Humanity, Instituto Consulado da Mulher and Care Counts. The third Whirlpool Community Week also took place in September 2019, which involved employees from 15 different countries working with over 30 non-profit organisations, donating 21,000 hours of their time to help their local communities.

Colleagues of Peterborough based Whirlpool UK Appliances Limited, parent company to KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Hotpoint and Indesit, volunteered in their local community as part of the international Whirlpool Community Week initiative, 23rd – 27th September 2019. A total of 200 hours were spent helping three different charities: FoodCycle, British Heart Foundation and Little Miracles.

Habitat for Humanity is a worldwide housing organisation that helps those in the world’s poorest countries by building or improving homes for those in need. Whirlpool Corporation has supported Habitat for Humanity for 20 years and to celebrate the landmark in 2019, the ‘Home Cooking with Love’ project was launched. The project saw Chef Roshara Sanders, who grew up in a Habitat home, devised two recipes for Habitat homeowners to enjoy, utilising healthy ingredients using their Whirlpool appliance, without breaking the budget. Since 1999, Whirlpool has donated over $107 million to the worthy cause and over 197,000 range cookers and fridges to new Habitat homes in the U.S. and Canada.

Instituto Consulado da Mulher aims to improve the lives of vulnerable women in Brazil, while eradicating poverty and promoting gender equality. The initiative, supported by Whirlpool, helps develop entrepreneurial business skills and prepare start-up businesses, while also supporting a network of women entrepreneurs to supply snacks to local businesses. In 2019, on-site cafeterias managed by businesses involved in the initiative were set-up across all of the Whirlpool Corporation sites in Brazil to provide refreshments to employees and valuable work experience to the women involved in the programme.

According to research, in the U.S., one in five school pupils do not have access to clean clothes, which can make them more likely to miss school*. The Whirlpool Care Counts programme aims to provide children with access to clean clothes by installing washing machines and tumble dryers in schools, ensuring children do not miss school due to lack of clean clothes. Since the programme began in 2014, Care Counts has provided support to more than 38,000 children in 82 schools across the U.S. The Whirlpool programme aims to sign up an additional 100 schools in 2020 to expand the support to those children in need.

Ian Moverley, Public Affairs Director, Whirlpool UK Appliances Limited, says: “It is important to us at Whirlpool to support the communities where our colleagues work and live. It is also important to help improve the lives of others, and those in need, by volunteering our time and donating resources. We are proud to be part of Whirlpool Corporation and appreciate our colleagues across the globe for their hard work and dedication in helping others who are less fortunate. We will continue to support our local communities here in the UK through partnerships, volunteering and donations of much needed resources.”
