Whirlpool Pledges Its Commitment To A Sustainable Future

Whirlpool UK Appliances Limited, parent company to KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Hotpoint and Indesit, together with its colleagues at Whirlpool Corporation, the leading major appliance manufacturer in the world, has shared its achievements, goals, and vision for a sustainable future.

In 2019, Whirlpool Corporation achieved its best rate of emission and energy reductions in over a decade, by investing in wind turbines and on-site solar panels, and is working towards reducing its factories greenhouse gas emissions by 50 per cent by 2030.

The major domestic appliance manufacturer is also striving for a zero waste to landfill goal at all manufacturing sites by 2022 and has introduced new systems and processes across the globe. For example, in the UK, re-usable coffee cups and stainless steel water bottles have been introduced, which will remove more than 158,000 single-use coffee cups and 56,000 plastic bottles from Whirlpool’s canteens.

As detailed in its comprehensive Sustainability Report*, Whirlpool Corporation achieved the following waste targets in 2019:

  • Over 96 per cent of its waste was sent to sustainable recycling plants
  • Under 3.5 per cent of its waste ended up in landfill
  • Only 0.5 per cent of its waste was incinerated
  • Eight of its manufacturing sites achieved zero waste to landfill

Whirlpool Corporation has embedded sustainable practices into each area of its business and is committed to manufacturing appliances that utilise materials with the lowest environmental impact possible, are resource-efficient and can be recycled at the end of the appliance’s life.
