Whirlpool UK Announces 2021 School Food Waste Project

Whirlpool UK Appliances Limited, the home of Hotpoint, Indesit, Whirlpool and KitchenAid brands, has announced the 2021 edition of its Moments Not To Be Wasted project, which aims to educate children and their families on sustainable and ethical food consumption.

The educational project is designed to provide primary schools with the tools required to inspire children and their families to develop their relationships with food, including raising their awareness of food selection, preservation and consumption. In addition, Moments Not To Be Wasted aims to change attitudes and behaviours towards sustainability in the kitchen.

According to research conducted by WRAP, households across the UK throw away 6.6 million tonnes of food each year, enough to fill 66,000 three-bed terraced houses*. In addition, almost three quarters, equivalent to 4.5 million tonnes, of food waste generated by UK households is food that we could have eaten*. While the amount of food waste dropped significantly during the Covid-19 pandemic, recent statistics indicate that the amount being generated has now returned to pre-pandemic levels**. What’s more, research shows that higher levels of food waste are associated with younger age groups, including children, particularly those aged between 0-10 years old and 11-17 years old**.

As the issue of food waste becomes more prominent, Whirlpool UK is dedicated to raising awareness of the promotion of food as a resource to be shared and not wasted, through the implementation of education in schools, in order to change habits and improve the nation’s attitude towards food waste.

Tailored towards children aged between six and 11 years old and their families, the project invites participating schools to access a range of dedicated Moments Not To Be Wasted educational materials, including activities, games, teaching resources and much more. In addition to enabling teachers to promote the importance of developing healthy eating habits and supporting sustainable development, the educational materials available will also help to develop knowledge and understanding of the five stages of the food supply chain (production, purchase, preservation, processing and consumption), while exploring all aspects of food education with simple and accessible language.

Schools are invited to enter a contest in which entrants are asked to share their ideas for a sustainable diet in an original and creative way, while demonstrating social and environmental awareness of the impact of food waste. Entries to the contest close on 31st May 2022. Contest entries will then be judged by an expert panel to decide on the three winning schools, which will receive £1,000 worth of kitchen appliances. For each class that participates, Whirlpool UK will make a donation to FoodCycle, a charity that uses surplus food to create community meals to help fight food waste, food poverty and loneliness across the UK. What’s more, all classes that have entered the competition will receive a certificate of participation.

To further support teachers, Whirlpool UK will also be organising and running a number of laboratory sessions in schools across the country over the coming months. The sessions will educate primary school classes on the five stages of the food supply chain, while engaging the children with a variety of games, experiments and activities.

Ian Moverley, Public Affairs Director, Whirlpool UK Appliances Limited says: “We are delighted to continue with our Moments Not To Be Wasted project in the UK. At Whirlpool UK, we believe that the education of children and young people is the key to fighting food waste and changing attitudes and behaviours in the kitchen. Through our Moments Not To Be Wasted project, which currently has over 100 schools signed up to take part, we hope that we can create a generation of families that strive towards a future based upon sustainable and ethical food consumption.

“We are dedicated to promoting issues surrounding food waste and the environment, demonstrated by our commitment to developing appliances with innovative technologies that enable consumers to increase sustainability in their homes. By educating children, the future of our planet, we are further demonstrating our long-term commitment to promoting sustainable and ethical food consumption and reducing food waste.”
