Knowle Park resident reaches final of national art competition

Knowle Park care home, part of the Caring Homes Group, and situated in Cranleigh, Surrey, has discovered that it may be home to its own Van Gogh!

A Knowle Park resident reached the final stage of the Elderly Accommodation Counsel’s (EAC) 2009 Over 60s Art Awards, an annual competition for amateur artists who are over the age of 60-years-old.

Anne Chaudri, 65, impressed the judges with ‘Autumn Colours’; her depiction of sunflowers created using Aquarelle crayons. This achievement is all the more impressive as Anne suffers from multiple sclerosis, and so completed her piece using alternating hands, switching to the left when her right hand was tired.

Ros Bailey, Activities Co-Ordinator at Knowle Park, says: “Everyone at Knowle Park is incredibly proud of Anne, and she truly deserves recognition for her hard work. Her picture is stunning, and really does stand out, so it is great that other people will have a chance to see it.

“We were also very impressed by the work of another Knowle Park resident, 93-year-old Marjorie Small, who submitted three paintings she had completed. The EAC Art Competition was a fantastic way to involve residents in a creative activity that gave them the chance to showcase their talents, and we hope to take part again in the future.”

Started in 1995, the EAC Art awards aim to celebrate the talent and creativity of elderly amateur artists. Entrants are whittled down to 100 finalists, whose work was then displayed in an exhibition at The Bankside Gallery in London, and online at www.eacawards.org.uk
