Most of us now realise the importance of sourcing our food, especially fresh ingredients, locally. The shorter the ‘loop’ between harvesting and storage in your refrigerator at home, the more nutritious, tasty and environmentally friendly the food. Not to mention making an investment in your local community, as this supports British farming, as well as the economy.
This also contributes to an essential part of our welfare, promoting a healthier, cheaper and more resource-saving relationship with food across the country; while our kitchen appliances play an important role in preserving and making the most of that food. Whirlpool, the world’s leading manufacturer of major home appliances, has introduced the latest cooling companion with revolutionary technology to provide the best frost-free climate for fresh and frozen food, to make your British ingredients last longer.
Whirlpool conducted a European survey1 that revealed consumers’ food habits and attitudes towards food preservation. 86 per cent of Europeans said avoiding food waste was a real priority and they wanted a new generation refrigerator that preserves food (including raw meat, fish, fruit and vegetables) freshness, taste and colour for longer. It also said that the supermarket run is a weekly ritual all across Europe for consumers to stock up on packaged food. However, some countries do still shop daily for fresh produce such as fruit, vegetables, milk, cheese and meat. In the UK for example, the survey revealed that people drink a glass of milk every morning and so buy milk about three times a week.
The Whirlpool Supreme NoFrost combi fridge freezer ensures excellent food preservation, optimum humidity and eliminates the mixing of odours between the fridge and the freezer with its two independent no frost systems. FreshControl technology constantly monitors temperature and humidity levels to keep fresh food in the ideal setting, helping it last up to four times longer2. This is achieved by not only monitoring parameters, but restoring them to optimum levels five times faster2 after the door has been opened.
The Activ0° compartment maintains the ideal environment for storing meat and fish at approximately 0°C, ensuring food stays fresher for longer, conserving its appearance, texture and nutritional properties. While the freezer eliminates irritating food-freezer burn and conserves the quality of frozen food, keeping it at its best for longer.
Jennifer Spragg, Brand and Digital Marketing Manager for Whirlpool, says: “Sourcing food locally is something we should all strive to do, and the British Food Fortnight campaign is an excellent way to celebrate home-grown ingredients and an opportunity to support the businesses behind them. To keep your local food fresher for longer, the Whirlpool Supreme NoFrost combi fridge freezer uses the latest technology to keep the whole weekly shop, whether fresh or frozen, in the optimum environment. Our latest model combines sleek, Absolute aesthetic along with the finest technology and heaps of additional features to make the perfect companion for healthy, environmentally responsible lifestyles.”

Since 2002, British Food Fortnight has run every autumn during the harvest season, to provide an opportunity for the nation to come together and promote the benefits of buying closer to home. Every year those from businesses, manufacturing and even the public sector create and attend various events to encourage our engagement with and support of local food sources. The official website provides examples of events for local companies to run, as well as resources for schools and tips for consumers; including a handy guide to what food is in season during the campaign.
