Walstead Place resident celebrates her 100th birthday

Mary Hughes, a resident at Walstead Place care home, located near Haywards Heath, West Sussex, celebrates reaching her century on 25th May 2010.

To mark Mary’s 100th birthday, Sir Richard Kleinwort, Bt, DL, one of the Deputy Lieutenants of West Sussex, will visit Walstead Place, and members of the Brighton Male Voice Choir will sing a selection of songs including, of course, Happy Birthday to You.

An intelligent, feisty lady who is full of ‘Joie de Vivre’, Mary, who married Perry when she was 21, has a devoted family of three children, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and a wide circle of friends. She likes to live her life according to her mottos of ‘keep smiling’ and ‘make the best of things’.

Music has always been an important part of her life. Mary used to play the piano, and would always sing or whistle while doing the gardening, housework or sewing. Mary loved to visit the theatre and cinema and enjoys going out with her son Brett for shopping trips or tea.

A keen card player, Mary was famous for her superb homemade cakes and pastries, served at the whist drives and tea parties she took great pleasure in organising.

After Perry died in 1970, Mary attended art and china painting classes at the local college of further education, a hobby she pursued for many years, producing many impressive pieces.

Mary loves Cheshire cheese and when she lived in Manchester she regularly walked to the local market to buy it. After she moved to London in 1998 to be nearer her daughter Moira, she asked friends to bring her some when they visited to make sure she never ran out!

Mary moved to Walstead Place, part of the Caring Homes group, in 2005 and has become a popular resident, along with her cat Suki, her constant companion.

Manager Jacquie Ferguson says: “Mary is a lovely lady who has made lots of friends here. We are all very excited about helping her celebrate her 100th birthday. She is a great example to us all and I’m sure her birthday celebrations will be lots of fun.”

Caring Homes Group

Walstead Place is just one of the prestigious care homes throughout the UK owned by the Caring Homes Group, the UK’s largest independent care home operator. Recently it has undergone a sympathetic renovation programme that has prioritised the comforts of luxurious, modern living while retaining the charm and character of the beautiful 19th century gentleman’s residence the home once was. The renovations included giving each bedroom new, high-quality furniture and changing the showers into wet rooms to improve safety and ease-of-use for residents.
