Out and About at the Homebuilding & Renovating Show

On Friday 30th September 2022, we were lucky enough to attend the Homebuilding & Renovating Show at the ExCeL, London. The Homebuilding & Renovating Show is one of the largest events of its kind in the UK, showcasing many of the industry’s leading designers, experts, builders and suppliers. Each year, thousands of visitors attend the event, which is held in various locations across the UK, in search of ideas, inspiration and advice for their extension, home improvement or self-build project.

We began our day by exploring the many stands that the show had to offer. With over 250 exhibitors attending the three-day event at the ExCeL, there certainly wasn’t a shortage of things to see! We were immediately drawn to the Tiny House Pro stand, which displayed a contemporary, beautifully designed small house that measured just 8 meters in length and 2.5 meters in width (pictured below). Inside, it featured an open plan living area and kitchen, bathroom and stairs leading to a double bed loft. The tiny house was beautifully decorated and, despite offering just 29 m2 of living space, it felt super spacious thanks to the use of clever furniture and storage solutions.

We then took a tour of a house on the Sips Eco stand (pictured above) that had been built with Structural Insulated Panels, offering increased insulation and energy performance, along with a whole heap of other benefits. Following this, we couldn’t resist stopping at the Master Spas stand to explore its range of hot tubs and swim spas. The swim spa, which can be used for relaxing, swimming, aquatic fitness, therapy and family fun, particularly caught our eye, and we couldn’t help but imagine ourselves enjoying a peaceful soak with a cocktail or two!

For visitors on the lookout for design and decorating inspiration for their newly built or renovated home, the exhibition offered stand after stand of beautiful home furnishings, fixtures and fittings, décor, appliances and flooring, as well as fireplaces and lighting to home tech and garden furniture.

We particularly liked the Mirror TVs on the PictureFrame.TV stand. The TV screen is placed behind a specially designed, semi-transparent mirror offering uninterrupted viewing when switched on, and leaving nothing but a perfectly mirrored surface when it’s switched off. They are available as either framed or frameless models, and the TVs even come in the form of kitchen splashbacks too (pictured below), providing a perfect solution for anyone hoping to achieve a completely streamlined look in their space.

Another highlight for us was the display of tiles that were on show on the ItalianStile stand (pictured above), which included a stylish leopard print design. We fell in love with a beautiful grey floating bed too (also pictured above)!

With three theatres, each boasting a jam-packed schedule of seminars and sessions throughout the day, we were spoilt for choice when it came to selecting which industry talks to attend. The Masterclass Theatre was the home of sessions covering topics including sustainability, technology and security. The Home Improvement Theatre covered all things renovation, such as advice on planning permission, materials and design. Finally, the Self Build Theatre was ideal for those looking for tips on a range of topics, from finding a plot, managing a self-build project and estimating costs, to planning permission and sustainable design.

We began by heading to the Home Improvement Theatre, where we joined the Kitchen Design Guide seminar led by Interior Design Expert from Kendall+Co, Julia Kendall. Julia offered a range of insightful tips and advice during her session, including the top things to consider when planning a kitchen design, the benefits of open and broken-plan spaces and the importance of the layout. We were really interested to learn all about the careful planning that goes into the positioning of appliances during the kitchen design process to create a space that flows perfectly. The seminar also included an on-screen presentation that was full of beautiful kitchen design inspiration, including a stunning pink freestanding kitchen island.

After stopping for a much-needed bite to eat, we made our way to the Masterclass Theatre, where we joined a seminar titled ‘Energy efficiency – an update on the new building regulations’. This session, which was led by Paul Newman from Potton, a timber frame self-build package company, was a ‘must attend’ talk for anyone to learn about the latest rules and regulations that will impact self-build and renovating projects. According to Paul, significant changes came into effect in June 2022 aimed at improving the energy efficiency of buildings, helping the country work towards its Net Zero by 2050 target. The seminar focused on the main factors to keep in mind during a self-build project to satisfy these requirements, and Paul also shared information on the most up to date energy efficiency regulations. We found the seminar really insightful and gained a lot of interesting information and helpful tips.

The Homebuilding & Renovating Show is truly a key date in the diary for any self-builders, renovators and home improvers. Located in the centre of the exhibition hall was the Advice Centre, where visitors can book free of charge consultations with industry experts. Whether you are planning improvements, renovating your home or building a brand new house, there are a range of professionals available to speak to during the exhibition, such as architects, builders, designers, finance professionals and eco experts, all of which are on hand to offer advice on all manner of questions or dilemmas.

We had a fantastic time exploring everything that was on offer at the Homebuilding & Renovating Show, wandering around the different areas of the exhibition and taking part in some really interesting seminars. We hope to attend again next year for more ideas, inspiration and expert advice!
