Stanbridge Primary - FIRST LEGO League tournament

STEM Tournaments Return Sponsored by Whirlpool UK Appliances Limited

Whirlpool UK Appliances Limited, the home of Hotpoint, has announced the highly-anticipated return of the FIRST® LEGO® League Whirlpool Peterborough and Bristol tournaments for the 2022/23 season.

Now in its fourth-year of funding the event in Peterborough, Whirlpool UK will be giving 15 local primary schools the opportunity to take part in the fun, global, science and technology competition. Whirlpool UK is fully funding all teams and providing them each with a LEGO SPIKE Prime robot, worth around £350. The FIRST® LEGO® League Whirlpool Peterborough tournament will take place at the World of Whirlpool showroom in Peterborough on 21st March 2023.

The Bristol tournament is taking place on Tuesday 7th March 2023 at Whirlpool UK’s site in Yate. Following a successful second year in Bristol, the appliance manufacturer is providing fully funded places and robotics equipment to 12 local primary school teams.

An innovative global STEM competition, FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge is delivered by the IET and sees over 679,000 young people from around the world participating each year to design and build competitive LEGO® robots. ‘Superpowered’ is the theme of this year’s FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge, which will encourage teams to present a solution to improve how energy can be stored, used and transferred.

The events in March will be a culmination of the teams’ hard work throughout the winter months, during which students will use their creativity and problem solving skills to develop a robot that will attempt ‘missions’ on a LEGO® playing board at the exhilarating tournament days.

At the tournaments, as well as being judged on the technical design of their robots, teams will have to demonstrate to a panel of industry judges how they have considered the core values integral to FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge, which include Discovery, Teamwork, and Impact. Participating teams will be in with the chance to represent Peterborough and Bristol at the national finals later in the year.

Discussing Whirlpool UK’s vision for the Peterborough and Bristol tournaments, Ian Moverley, Communications Director, Whirlpool UK Appliances Limited, comments: “We are delighted to be engaging with schools in the Peterborough and Bristol areas to enable local children to participate in this unique competition and to host the event in-person for the communities again.

“Building on the success of last year’s events, we are also pleased to be able to offer fully sponsored places to an additional two schools in Bristol. We hope that, by providing all teams with the robots and everything they need to compete, we can inspire more young people to develop critical STEM and transferable skills, including creativity and perseverance.”

Sponsored places for the upcoming Whirlpool Peterborough and Bristol tournaments are still available; please get in touch with jmm PR who can pass this on to Whirlpool UK. Alternatively, please email Elle Roberts Nissen at: elle.roberts-nissen@consciouscomms.com.
