House Beautiful – Bedroom lighting ideas to brighten your space

The bedroom is arguably the room in the house where it’s most important to feel cosy and relaxed. This is particularly true during winter, when many of us find ourselves retreating to bed slightly earlier than usual to cosy up under our duvets. In this article, House Beautiful teaches us about the importance of ‘layering’ your lighting to achieve a multifunctional space that is both stylish and tranquil.

According to the article, “’The key to producing the right balance is to layer your lighting correctly to provide a mixture of task, ambient and accent points, which are crucial in creating a calming space”. Simply put, task lighting provides illumination for specific actitivites such as reading or getting ready in the morning, ambient lighting is achieved through the use of shades and coloured bulbs to create a cosy atmopshere, and accent lighting draws the eye to a particular focal point, such as a mirror or a stylish piece of artwork.

In addition to these helpful tips, the House Beautiful team also provides a round up of their top lighting picks and the important factors to consider when purchasing them, such as ceiling and wall lighting, lamp shades and fairly lights. Our favoruite is the soft fabric wall light from H&M, which would look stunning fitted either side of a bed for a modern and sophisticated look.

So if you’re growing tired of your lighting and want to give your bedroom a fresh new makeover, this article proves just how easy it is to transform your space with a few simple updates. If you’re planning on revamping your bedroom lighting soon, make sure you remember House Beautiful’s three all-important factors; task, ambient and accent!

Good Homes – Living room ideas: new décor inspiration for upgrading your lounge

If your living room is due an upgrade, then look no further than this article from Good Homes, which provides a plethora of ideas for turning your lounge into a super-stylish space to relax, watch some TV and spend time with your loved ones.

The first idea in the article is ‘contrast panelling’, which can be achieved by painting the beading of a wall panel in a bold contrasting colour (see pictured above). The virbrant colour of the beading in the image from Dunelm looks great with the bold accessories that have been added to the room, such as the bright pink candlestick and gold monkey table!

We love the ‘soft textures’ idea in the article (you just can’t beat a good cushion can you!). Good Homes takes this idea beyond cushions, throws and rugs, suggesting that walls are painted with textural paint effects to add another dimension to the room. The article gives paint suggestions, so be sure to check it out if this sounds like something you would like to try.

Something included in the article that we have never thought of before is to mix and match modular sofas. The idea is taken from DFS whereby each segment of a modular sofa is a different colour (pictured below)! This creates a unique design and is sure to impress friends (when we are allowed vistors once again!).
