Peterborough based Whirlpool UK Appliances Limited, parent company to KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Hotpoint and Indesit, has donated appliances to FoodCycle, a charity that uses surplus food to create community meals to fight food waste, food poverty and loneliness across the UK.
A number of fridges were donated to FoodCycle community projects across England, in locations such as Liverpool, Salford and Sutton Coldfield. The fridges were donated to provide a place to store fresh ingredients used to cook meals for people experiencing food poverty in towns and cities across the country.
Since their first cooking session in May 2009, FoodCycle has gone on to run 42 projects across England, each aiming to strengthen communities by bringing people together around a healthy meal. Dedicated to creating a society where no one is left hungry or lonely, FoodCycle receives support from over 4,000 volunteers, allowing the charity to serve nutritious meals cooked using surplus food to over 1,500 people each week.
One of the appliances donated to FoodCycle was the ‘A+’ rated Hotpoint refrigerator (SH6 1Q W UK.1), which benefits from a series of innovations that help give food a longer life, including Day 1 technology. Addressing the issue of food waste and helping to care for food to keep it fresh for longer, Day 1 technology ensures optimal storage of fresh fruit and vegetables, using multi-temperature storage zones, technologies that keep bacteria at bay and Precision Temperature Control. The Hotpoint refrigerator (SH6 1Q W UK.1) was donated to FoodCycle to provide the ultimate freshness for the surplus ingredients used to feed those who otherwise would not have access to a hot meal.
Ian Moverley, Public Affairs Director, Whirlpool UK Appliances Limited, says: “We are proud to support FoodCycle and the pivotal work the charity does for communities across the country. At Whirlpool UK, it is our mission to reduce the amount of edible food being wasted and FoodCycle shares this commitment by using surplus food to create meals for people facing food poverty. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to donate appliances to community projects and to support the work done by FoodCycle, helping the charity nourish communities using surplus food”.
In 2019, Hotpoint teamed up with brand ambassador Jamie Oliver to encourage the nation to take on the Eat Your Fridge Challenge, part of the brand’s ongoing Fresh Thinking for Forgotten Food campaign. As part of the challenge, consumers were encouraged to spend seven days being more mindful when it comes to cooking, eating root-to-stem where possible, and committing to throwing away zero edible food waste. Each time the hashtag #EatYourFridge was used on social media, Hotpoint donated the value of four meals to FoodCycle, donating a total of £19,800 as part of the campaign.
Whirlpool UK further supported FoodCycle during its Community Week initiative, an annual event that sees colleagues volunteer for charities in the local community. Whirlpool UK colleagues spent a total of over 200 hours volunteering during the Whirlpool Community Week in 2019, undertaking activities including giving the kitchen space at FoodCycle in Peterborough a deep clean and helping to prepare and host a dinner for members of the local community.
